Chevening Scholar Alhussen Al Najjar Attends the Yorkshire Post Climate Change Summit 2025

Chevening Scholar Alhussen Al Najjar, recently had the opportunity to attend the Yorkshire Post Climate Change Summit 2025 in Leeds — a gathering that unites policymakers, academics, and innovators under one roof with a common goal to drive the UK’s climate action forward.

Participating as a representative of the Chevening community, Alhussen shared that the summit was “invaluable to help me further understand the UK transition to net zero and how powerful leadership is at building climate resilience.”

Opening the day of discussion and inspiration, Katie White OBE MP, the UK Climate Minister, highlighted that “transition to net zero is the economic opportunity of the century.” Echoing this forward-looking spirit were other keynote speakers such as Chelsea Boothroyd (Priestley Centre for Climate Futures), Victoria Murray (Innovative Flood Resilience, York and North Yorkshire), and Mark Henderson (Flood Risk Strategy), who offered unique perspectives on bold policymaking, community empowerment, and cross-sector collaboration as the way forward for taking climate action to the next level.

Alhussen later reflected on his experience by saying that “tackling climate change is not just an environmental duty, but an opportunity to reimagine our economies, empower our communities, and inspire global impact.”

Attending this prestigious event exemplifies the Chevening spirit of leadership and innovation, and shows how Yemeni Scholars are actively contributing to the global dialogue on sustainability and climate resilience.
